Trump Faces Backlash From Crypto Supporters Over $TRUMP Token and Digital Asset Profits

Donald Trump’s once-strong standing among cryptocurrency supporters is showing signs of strain as some investors question whether his embrace of digital assets has delivered on expectations.

Carl Runefelt, a crypto-focused content creator known online as “The Moon,” has built a following of more than 2 million people on TikTok. Although he says he does not closely follow politics, Runefelt was encouraged when Trump began publicly supporting bitcoin and the wider cryptocurrency industry.

He bought additional bitcoin to mark what he saw as a major political shift toward crypto and also invested a small amount in Trump’s own digital token, $TRUMP.

That enthusiasm has since cooled.

The value of the $TRUMP token has fallen sharply from its earlier levels, while the U.S. crypto reserve promoted by Trump has so far failed to meet the expectations of some investors. Across crypto forums, social media discussions and online communities, excitement surrounding Trump has increasingly been replaced by frustration.

“Trump was the hero in crypto, like, a couple of years ago, and now it’s like the exact opposite,” Runefelt said. He argued that the president’s involvement in crypto-linked ventures risks reinforcing criticism that the industry is dominated by speculative projects and questionable financial practices.

Trump has long presented himself as a businessman skilled at navigating complex financial deals, an image that has remained central to his political identity. During his years in public life, controversies involving his taxes and payments to Trump-owned businesses did little to weaken support among many of his political backers, some of whom viewed those actions as evidence of his business instincts.

The political environment, however, may now be shifting.

As concerns grow among some Americans over the administration’s economic performance, scrutiny of the financial benefits received by Trump and members of his family has intensified. The issue has attracted particular attention within the cryptocurrency community, where investors are often more familiar with the mechanics of tokens, digital assets and crypto-related business ventures.

Some of the strongest criticism is coming from younger male crypto investors who initially welcomed Trump’s support for the sector during his campaign. Their disappointment reflects a wider debate over the relationship between political power, cryptocurrency promotion and personal financial interests.

Trump and his family have developed several cryptocurrency-related ventures, and reporting has estimated that those activities generated substantial income. That financial success is now becoming part of a broader discussion among crypto supporters about whether the policies and projects introduced under Trump have benefited the industry as widely as many had hoped.
