DUBAI, UAE — Dubai Duty Free has become the first airport retailer in the Middle East to accept cryptocurrency payments, rolling out Crypto.com Pay across its retail outlets at Dubai International Airport (DXB), Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), and its online shopping platform.
The new payment solution allows travelers to pay for purchases using supported cryptocurrencies through the Crypto.com App. In physical stores, customers can complete transactions by scanning a QR code at the checkout, while online shoppers can authorize payments either by scanning a QR code or by being redirected to the Crypto.com App on mobile devices.
Under the arrangement, all cryptocurrency transactions are processed through Crypto.com’s regulated payment infrastructure. Dubai Duty Free receives settlements instantly in UAE dirhams, protecting the retailer from cryptocurrency price volatility while ensuring seamless integration with its existing financial operations.
The launch supports Dubai’s broader vision of becoming a global hub for digital finance and advanced payment technologies. It also aligns with the emirate’s Cashless Strategy, which aims for 90% of all financial transactions in Dubai to be conducted through cashless payment methods by the end of 2026.
Dubai Duty Free, one of the world’s largest airport retailers, serves millions of passengers annually through its operations at Dubai’s two international airports. The company recorded more than AED 8 billion (US$2.2 billion) in sales during 2025, highlighting its position as a major player in global travel retail.
The introduction of cryptocurrency payments comes as demand for digital payment options continues to grow among international travelers, particularly younger consumers and frequent users of digital assets seeking faster and more flexible payment methods.
By adopting cryptocurrency payments, Dubai Duty Free joins a growing group of international travel retailers embracing digital assets as a payment option. The system provides secure, contactless transactions while remaining compliant with applicable financial regulations.
The initiative also reinforces Dubai’s reputation as a leading destination for fintech, blockchain, and digital asset innovation. In recent years, the emirate has introduced supportive regulatory frameworks and investment initiatives designed to attract global technology and cryptocurrency businesses.
For travelers, the addition of cryptocurrency payments offers greater flexibility when shopping at one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, further enhancing Dubai’s technology-driven and customer-focused travel experience.
