Ethereum came under renewed selling pressure as expectations for a US Federal Reserve interest-rate increase in September strengthened, weighing on investor appetite for riskier assets.
Market pricing indicated a 67% probability of a September Fed rate hike, compared with a 33% chance of rates remaining unchanged. The shift in expectations has added pressure to cryptocurrencies, which tend to face stronger headwinds when interest rates rise and investors have access to relatively safer, yield-generating assets.
The latest move in Ethereum also comes amid renewed tensions between the United States and Iran, raising concerns about energy supplies and the potential inflationary consequences of higher crude oil prices.

ToggleGeopolitical tensions fuel inflation concerns
The escalation in the US-Iran conflict has become an additional source of uncertainty for financial markets. Reports said the United States launched fresh airstrikes against Iranian targets, while Iranian officials warned that Tehran could seek to disrupt oil exports through the Persian Gulf.
Any prolonged disruption to energy supplies could push crude oil prices higher, potentially increasing inflationary pressure in the US. That scenario could complicate the Federal Reserve’s efforts to bring inflation under control and strengthen expectations for tighter monetary policy.
According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders were assigning a 67% probability to a rate increase at the September Federal Open Market Committee meeting. A higher-rate environment generally reduces the appeal of speculative assets such as cryptocurrencies because investors can earn greater returns from lower-risk assets such as government bonds.
For Ethereum, the combination of geopolitical uncertainty, higher oil prices and shifting Fed expectations has created a more challenging short-term backdrop.
Ethereum remains higher despite recent pullback
Despite the latest weakness, Ethereum’s broader short-term trend remains constructive. The cryptocurrency has gained roughly 29% over the past two weeks, following a strong advance that pushed prices through several important resistance areas.
The current decline appears to be testing a key technical pivot zone after the recent rally. Whether Ethereum can hold that area could determine whether the cryptocurrency resumes its upward move or enters a deeper period of consolidation.
Ethereum is also trading above its 50-day, 100-day and 200-day Simple Moving Averages, suggesting that the broader technical structure remains bullish.
$3,000 remains a key resistance level
From a technical perspective, Ethereum’s next major challenge is the $3,000 level, which represents both a psychological barrier and an important area of market interest.
A decisive move above $3,000 could strengthen the bullish setup and potentially open the way toward the next significant resistance around $3,270.
However, failure to regain the $3,000 level could leave Ethereum vulnerable to further profit-taking, particularly if broader financial markets continue to price in tighter US monetary policy.
Key support levels come into focus
On the downside, the $2,000 level remains an important area for Ethereum. The psychological support zone also aligns with the 200-day SMA, making it a particularly significant level from a technical perspective.
A sustained break below $2,000 could increase selling and liquidation pressure, potentially exposing Ethereum to a deeper decline toward $1,800, where stronger structural support may emerge.
Traders are therefore likely to monitor the $2,000-$3,000 range closely as the market assesses whether Ethereum’s recent rally can continue.
Overbought indicators point to possible consolidation
Momentum indicators are also signaling caution following Ethereum’s sharp advance. Both the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) are showing conditions associated with an overbought market.
Such readings do not necessarily mean a major reversal is imminent, but they can indicate that the pace of the recent rally may be difficult to sustain without a period of consolidation or a short-term pullback.
Ethereum’s next major move is likely to depend on a combination of technical levels and the wider macroeconomic environment. Developments in the US-Iran conflict, crude oil prices and expectations for Federal Reserve policy could all influence risk appetite in cryptocurrency markets.
For now, Ethereum retains a bullish short-term structure, but rising expectations for higher US interest rates are creating a significant test for the cryptocurrency’s recent rally.
